Just Like Us school talks are delivered by ambassadors, LGBT+ young adults aged 18 to 25, providing authentic, meaningful and relatable representation to school pupils.
Ambassadors share their own stories of growing up LGBT+, using storytelling as a tool to engage pupils and equip them with key, actionable takeaways. They also offer an interactive Q&A, cultivating an encouraging and safe space for pupils to ask questions of people with lived experience and gain further understanding.
Elin Blake, a staff member at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun in Aberdare, said: “The Just Like Us school talk had a really positive impact on our younger pupils. It sparked important conversations and highlighted the importance of accepting and supporting their LGBT+ friends and peers.
“The pupils learned new terminology and dispelled some myths and misinformation which inevitably circulates around young people. We’ve already got our next talk booked!”
Just Like Us school talks are tailored to schools, meeting them where they are in their inclusion journey and taking into account the needs of their school community.
Schools can also access holistic support from Just Like Us, including one-to-one calls and a companion guide to support them before, during and after their talk.
Laura Mackay, Chief Executive of Just Like Us, the LGBT+ young people’s charity, said: “We are thrilled to announce that we are now able to offer free school talks to schools across Wales. Our research has shown that LGBT+ school pupils in Wales were the most likely to report feeling isolated – but positive, relatable LGBT+ representation can help change that.
“As recent school leavers themselves, our ambassadors have a significant impact when sharing their stories and experiences. Not only can give LGBT+ pupils positive examples of what is possible for them in the near future, but they can also encourage allyship among non-LGBT+ pupils, creating a school environment that is safe, welcoming and uplifting for everyone.”
